How do I size jump rings by drill height?
Start by measuring drill height, the distance from the hole center to the closest edge. That single number drives inner diameter. A ring that is too small will bind at the edge and kink the hang.
As a working rule, choose an inner diameter about twice the drill height so the bead can articulate. This approach tracks the bench advice shared in Ganoksin shop talk about letting hardware clear the edge for free movement.
Pyramids are drilled across the base, so measure from the base hole to the outer base edge. Trilliants are top drilled across one corner, so measure from that corner hole to the nearest outer edge. See our shape notes for Pyramids and Trilliants.
What inner diameters work for shallow and deep drills?
Use your measurement to pick a size, then test-fit. Two shop-floor examples illustrate the math used by bench jewelers:
If the hole sits about .5 mm from the edge, use roughly a 1 mm inner diameter so it swings. If the hole sits about 1 mm from the edge, choose an inner diameter about twice that distance. Both follow the free-clearance rule discussed on Ganoksin.
If you hang the bead directly on a chain, upsize the ring slightly so the chain passes cleanly and still clears the edge. Keep the ring round after assembly so the ID you chose remains true.
Which wire gauge should I run through the bead?
Let the bead hole decide. Pick the thickest wire that slides smoothly through the hole, then form your jump ring or choose a premade ring in that gauge.
Ganoksin contributors note that a 10 gauge wire asks for a hole around 3 mm in stone drilling work. That shows the relationship: bigger wire needs a larger hole. Scale the idea to beads by test-fitting wire until you find the largest that passes easily.
If you need more stiffness than the hole allows, make a small ring through the bead and connect it to a heavier outer ring or bail. That two-ring approach preserves movement without forcing thick wire through a tight hole.
What fits pyramid beads best?
Pyramids hang point-out because they are drilled across the base. We like a compact round ring for a tight cluster, or a small oval ring to bias the hang forward for a single pendant look.

For spike necklaces, keep the inner diameter just large enough to clear the edge so the bases sit close. For earrings, a slightly larger ring gives more dangle and avoids crowding the loop above.
How do I hang trilliant beads cleanly?
Trilliants are top drilled across one corner. Measure from the hole center at that corner to the nearest outer edge, then size the ring inner diameter about twice that distance.
Avoid hardware that bears directly on the sharp point. Stone-setting pros emphasize keeping metal off the tip on angular cuts, advice that carries over to hanging from a corner. A slightly larger ring can keep the point free.

Can I use a premade bail instead of a jump ring?
Yes, size the bail's loop by the same drill-height rule. The loop that passes the bead must clear the edge the same way a jump ring would.
If your bail has two different loop sizes, let the smaller loop go through the bead and the larger loop face the chain. Upsize the outer loop as needed for the chain or cord without changing the inner loop that fits the drill.
