How many 6 mm beads do I need for 18 inches?
Work backward from your finished length. Subtract about 1.5 inches for the clasp area and use the rest for beads. For 6 mm, that lands around 66-70 beads based on standard charts and typical strand counts. We count rondelles by their diameter across the string; see our Rondelles page for how sizing works.
How many 8 mm beads do I need for 18 inches?
Plan about 50-52 beads for 8 mm to finish at 18 inches with a standard clasp area. That aligns with common beads-per-inch guidance and what we see on cutter strands. Simple. Reliable.

Is one 15-16 inch strand enough for 18 inches?
Usually yes. A 15 to 16 inch strand of 6 mm rondelles holds about 65 to 70 beads, and 8 mm holds about 48 to 52. That typically covers the counts above with a small buffer, depending on your clasp choice.
Standard cutter strands run 13 to 16 inches. If yours is shorter, count the beads first and consider two strands to be safe.
What do I do about the clasp and findings?
Allow around 1.5 inches for the complete clasp assembly. Build the bead section to the remainder of your 18 inch target, test the fit, then attach your clasp. If you prefer a larger toggle or an extender, stop the beads a bit sooner so the finished length stays at 18 inches.

Will knotting or spacers change my bead count?
Yes. Knots add length between beads, so you'll need fewer beads overall. A useful rule of thumb is about 1 mm of added length per knot per bead when fully knotted.
Metal spacers also add length; lay out a 10-bead test with your chosen spacers and measure. Remember: 25.4 mm equals one inch for quick checks.
Can I mix rondelles and rounds and still use this math?
Yes — count by the diameter that lies along the string. A 6x4 mm rondelle behaves like a 6 mm round for spacing along the strand. Graduated strands vary; average a 10-bead segment and scale up for accuracy.

Where can I get strands for this project?
We import Jaipur-cut gemstone strands and list the exact size, shape, and cut on each page. Browse Sapphire Gray, Ruby, Emerald, and Tourmaline rondelles; most photos are of the actual strand.
