Short answer

For bracelets, choose rounded rondelles or ovals at 6 mm and larger, and avoid 3 to 4 mm and any pointed shapes. For necklaces, rondelles, ovals, pears, or teardrops at 4 mm and up wear more safely; avoid under 3 mm. Heishi discs are risky on wrists due to edge wear, so keep them for necklaces. String with a gentle lay.

In short

  • Bracelets: use 6 mm plus rounded rondelles or ovals.
  • Avoid 3 to 4 mm tanzanite on bracelets; too chip prone.
  • Necklaces handle 4 mm plus; put pears and teardrops up front.
  • Heishi edges chip on wrists; reserve them for necklaces.
  • Leave slight play and use spacers to reduce bead contact.

Which tanzanite shapes are safest for bracelets?

For bracelets, pick rounded profiles first. We see the best survival from smooth ovals and well-proportioned rondelles. Their edges are blunt, so knocks spread over more area. Round beats point.

We avoid heishi for tanzanite bracelets. Each disc presents two thin rims that can abrade against neighbors or a tabletop. Pears and tear drops put force on a point, which risks chips on a wrist. That is risky.

What minimum bead sizes should I avoid?

For bracelets, keep tanzanite at 6 mm and larger, and skip 3 to 4 mm. More mass and rounder edges resist incidental bumps better. On necklaces, 4 mm and up wears smoothly when you give the strand a gentle lay that avoids tight bends and hard contact points along the collarbone. See our tanzanite stone guide for the material basics.

We reserve 3 mm accents for earrings or the front of a necklace, away from collarbones. If a strand mixes sizes, stage the smallest near the clasp or high on the neckline.

How many 6 mm beads do you need?

Plan counts before you cut. A 7.5 in bracelet uses about 6 in of beads, which is about 25 beads at 6 mm. A 7 in bracelet uses about 23. An 18 in necklace uses about 70, and a 16 in choker uses about 61.

If your strand runs 15 to 16 inches, 6 mm rondelles total about 65 to 70 beads. Two strands make a longer necklace with room to edit the layout. Knotting between beads adds about 1 mm per knot, which grows the length quickly.

How should I string tanzanite for longer wear?

Do not clamp beads too tightly. Leave a hair of play so beads can rotate instead of grinding edge to edge. Small spacers can cushion layouts with mixed shapes. Test the drape before final crimps.

Anish here: on bracelets I favor flexible beading wire with gentle crimps and wire guardians to avoid sharp bends at the clasp. For necklaces, soft thread sits well and lets beads settle as you move. A touch of pre-stretch on thread helps the fit. Keep hardware smooth.

Which shapes suit necklaces and chokers best?

Necklaces are kinder to tanzanite. We like graduated pears and tear drops at the front, with rondelles or ovals climbing up the sides. This keeps points away from impact and lets the color show. The layout looks deliberate.

Heishi read as one blue-violet column on the neck. They work better here than on a wrist. A tabletop or a keyboard can chew on edges over time.

Care that keeps tanzanite strands looking good

Tanzanite is Mohs 6 to 7 with one direction of perfect cleavage, so avoid abrasion and shocks. Use warm water with a drop of mild detergent. Work with a soft brush. Our tanzanite guide covers core care.

Avoid ultrasonic or steam. Prevent sudden temperature changes. Most gem references favor tanzanite for earrings or pendants, and for necklaces over bracelets. We agree, and we string designs to protect corners and thin edges.

Common questions

Are faceted or smooth tanzanite beads better for durability?

Smooth ovals and plumper rondelles are kinder on a wrist. Sharp facet junctions and thin rims show wear sooner, especially on bracelets.

Can I use heishi tanzanite in stacking bracelets?

We would not. The thin disc edges rub and chip in stacks. Use heishi for necklaces and save bracelets for rounded shapes at 6 mm and up.

Where should I place pears or teardrops in a necklace?

Keep pointed drops at the front and center. Use rondelles or ovals up the sides so the points do not see shoulder or collar contact.

What strand length do Jaipur-cut tanzanite beads come in?

Standard strands from Jaipur cutters run about 13 to 16 inches. One strand covers a bracelet or choker, and two strands make a longer necklace.

How small can necklace beads be without frequent chips?

We keep necklace beads at 4 mm and up for smoother wear. If you must use 3 mm, place them away from contact points and avoid tight stringing.
