A brown you can read straight through.

Hold a strand to a window and the brown reads clear through it, tea at the light end, cola at the dark. Cognac is the warm middle, a gold-brown like a maple leaf on the day it turns. Faceted, the small planes catch and throw sparks in a color that stays quiet. Makers reach for it because it sits well beside copper and black leather, and because a good strand asks very little of a budget.

In crystal tradition smoky quartz is called a grounding stone, the one people are told to hold when they feel scattered or pulled in too many directions. It is said to draw the attention back down into the body and the day at hand, the way a heavy coat settles a person in wind. The dark end of the color gets much of the credit in that telling, since brown is the color people associate with soil and bark and the underside of things.
